Dear expats, visitors, and friends of Bulgaria,

What do you think are the major stereotypes about Bulgaria that you as foreigners or Bulgarians have encountered around the world, among the public or among international media? Have you found those to be generally true or generally false?

Are the stereotypes the key to Bulgaria's generally bad image abroad?

there are stereotypes in every country. I recently had to set a Bulgarian straight about the stereotypical "Brit" being a beer swilling, ill educated, drunken lout! I believe we left most of that back with the Xenophobes in the UK!

It may be uncomfortable but it IS a truth nonetheless that a fair few Brits over here do indeed closely match that "photo-fit"

I've been lucky enough not to have encountered any of them in Sofia so far (perhaps because we move in mainly Bulgarian circles) but there's no shortage of such people in many of the "Brit Villages" in Bulgaria.

That said, I've also met many of them in France, Greece and Spain....and sadly you don't have to be ill-educated to be an ignorant, boorish drunk.

Well... from my personal experience I can only say that I didn't know a thing about Bulgaria before visiting it on a business assignment in 2011.

So the problem for me wasn't that I had any prejudice based on stereotypes but that I knew nothing about it.

I think for a country such as Bulgaria being largely unknown is a much greater problem than being associated with any kind of negative stereotypes...

On the other hand, while in Bulgaria I learned that Americans have a pretty unpleasant image with the general public;

from what I understand Bulgarians generally tend to think of Americans as uneducated/dumb/ignorant, and fat. It was just sad to see so many Bulgarians sticking to this generalization....

No way - that's what they think about Brits - only with "drunk" added to the list.
